Autism, Understanding Spectrum Disorders: Reading Behaviors as Nonverbal Communication 

  • Six Sessions brings parents, family members, community members, regular education teachers, special education teachers and paraprofessionals teaching, interacting with or interested in learning about individuals with autism spectrum disorders.
    Increasing population of individuals diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders; participation of individuals with autism spectrum disorders in inclusive educaiton settings; need for management of challenging behaviors exhibited by individuals on the autism spectrum; training needs for teachers and other instructors of students with autism spectrum disorders.
    In service training on aspects of autism spectrum disorders
  • neurological differences
  • behavioral responses
  • introduction of dysfunction in sensory integration and discussion of classroom implications
  • receptive and expressive language skills
  • auditory processing skills
  • learning preferences and styles
  • make and take of behavior management techniques

Objectives:
1 -Emphasize basic characteristics of autism and other learning disabilities that may affect classroom performance including receptive language weaknesses, expressive language disorders, pragmatic problems, neurological differences, and dis-executive function. 2 -provide simulation of snesory processing disorder symptoms and learning implications, 3 - explain causese of studnet behaviors, RAGE cycle, and positive behavioral interventions, 4 - provide teaching strategies and reasons classroom modifications are needed.

Expected Outcomes:
1- Participants will be able to understand behaviors of studnets with autism spectrum disorders participating in their regular or special educaiton classrooms or in the community
2 - Participants will identify and provide alternative methods for handling behavior problems based on the causes of the behaviors.
3 - Participants will identify needed modifications and accommodations based on individuals' needs and abilities.
